Director Position (Accepting Letters of Interest)

Background

The North Myrtle Beach Community Band (NMBCB) is a group of amateur and professional musicians from the general region of the South Carolina Grand Strand. The band is presently accepting letters of interest for a Director to begin in the fall of 2018. The NMBCB rehearses on Thursday evenings from late September through early June at North Myrtle Beach High School. Presenting three formal concerts annually, the band occasionally takes on special projects or performances. The NMBCB is established as a 501(c)(3) entity.

Position Description

The Director conducts and is responsible for all rehearsals and performances of the Band. He/she selects the musical literature to be rehearsed and performed by the band. The Director has control over artistic decisions, taking into account the history/traditions of the “community band” and will be open to suggestions from the Board of Directors and Band membership.

The position includes an annual stipend.

Expected Qualifications/Skills

  • Prior conducting experience and knowledge of band literature.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities with conducting, teaching and communication skills.
  • Has the ability and demeanor to work with adult musicians of all skill levels, as well as the occasional High School musician.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Director’s Role Within the Board of Directors

The NMBCB Board of Directors is responsible for the overall administration of the group, which includes tasks such as:

  • Scheduling Board and Membership meetings as appropriate
  • Communicating with membership outside of rehearsal
  • Booking performance venues
  • Marketing performances and the group as a whole
  • Financial management

While the Director position is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors, the Board welcomes and expects input from the Director to ensure that the Board is supporting the Director’s vision and musical efforts for each performance.

The North Myrtle Beach Community Band provides volunteers of the Grand Strand community the educational opportunity to both perform and appreciate musical works composed for concert band. We are a volunteer organization that works to produce high-quality music in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
